The first night post-op went smoothly. Ranee rested well, with an occasional whinge here and there. This morning she was determined to try and walk so I wrapped a towel under her belly and guided her outside. She stood there a while probably trying to figure out what happened to her leg. Ranee still has an appetite; she laps up water from my hand, and eats pieces of cheese (which I put her pills inside). We have to take her back to the vet in the morning to assess her condition and remove the catheter in her front leg (left there in case we needed to take Ranee to the emergency hospital).
getting through the first night is great!! hope the return to the vet is uneventful for all of you. the first ‘pee’ and first ‘poop’ will have you so excited, trust us… glad raney is eating and drinking..cheese is great for hiding pills!

Congrats on the first night! Sounds like she is doing well!
To make it easier on you and more comfy, instead of a towel under her belly, use a reusable shopping bag you can buy at any grocery. Run scissors down the sides to open up the shopping bag so you have a sling with handles.
Good luck at the vet!
We celebrate everything around here, first pee and poop included. We can even pass out party hats if you give us enough notice! I know you’re relieved she did well during the night. She may have a rough night down the road as the surgery meds work their way out, but there will be more good days than bad. And as strong as she is, she will likely just look nowhere but forward.

The first nigth can be rough and sleeplesss, but it sounds like you guys got through it well! Hope that continues. Maybe she will sail right through the recovery period.
And, yes, we really do get excited about first poops. So, let us know when she hits the big milestones! 🙂
We need more pics of your big beautiful girl.
All the best to her,
Jackie, Abby’s mom
She sure is a beauty! Glad the first night was mostly uneventful. Hopefully that continues…

Everyone is so right about that first pee and poop! Spencer took a little while for both – the pee took him not being supported. He just wouldn’t go while I used the sling. For the poop, I gave him canned pumpkin for a few meals and it really seemed to help! Glad to hear that she is doing so great with recovery!!
